My daughter, Emely was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in her right femur. Dana Farber and Boston Children’s Hospital are one of the best sarcoma centers in the US and we knew we needed to be in Boston. We had so many concerns. Moving to a city where we knew no one, all the cancer treatment, the covid-19 pandemic, hospital costs, food costs, housing costs, etc. Staying at Ronald McDonald House at Boston Harbor helped us get through Emely’s cancer treatment as a family.
Emely’s treatment lasted 9 months and we were living in a hotel for the first 5 months. The cost was almost $4,000 per month which we could not manage anymore. Staying at the Ronald McDonald House at Boston Harbor relieved financial and emotional stress. They helped us tremendously with housing, food, and were always supportive in Emely’s cancer treatment process.
The treatment and support of the Ronald McDonald House staff is something that we did not have at the hotel. We really felt that the apartment was like our home. It was such a positive experience and helped my family overcome this difficult situation. It was our most enjoyable time together as a family.
My advice for fathers, or any parent in our situation, be positive, take one day at a time, try to learn as much as possible about the condition and trust God.
